Chinois Ring
The second piece in the Oriental series. Chinese ink painting on translucent enamel glass, held in a brass ring, with a warm halo running behind it.

The panel takes its cue from Chinese ink painting — a tradition where what counts is not the filled surface but the brushstroke and the emptiness left around it.
The composition follows that. Blossoming plum branches enter from both sides of the circle, birds cross the air, mountains and water dissolve into mist below. The centre of the circle is deliberately empty. This is liubai, the left-white — where an ink painting leaves the paper bare, here the light comes through at its clearest.
The Hokusai Ring arrives from the Japanese woodblock print; the Chinois Ring from Chinese ink painting. One construction, two pictorial traditions — that is what the series is built from.
The object
A Ø520 mm panel in a brass ring on a solid base. The panel is translucent enamel glass with a hand-painted surface: switched off it is still a picture, not a dark disc.
The light source is invisible. A concealed LED halo runs inside the frame and an opal acrylic diffuser mixes the light, so the panel reads evenly and the edge holds a continuous warm glow. No visible cable and no switch: a short touch on the base turns it on, a long touch sets the level.
Construction
Build-up, outside in: enamel glass panel (8 mm) · opal diffuser · concealed LED light guide · brass frame (15 mm visible width). The disc sits on a brass connector on the base, and the technical parts live in the base.
High colour rendering is a condition here too. The greys of the ink and the pale pink of the plum blossom go flat under a low-CRI source — more in the knowledge base.
