The house that became a product

The renovation of a 120 m² house on two floors on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. The client asked for a decorative, expressive interior — and two of the pieces designed for it are now products of their own.

The brief

In a holiday house the owner spends a few weeks a year. What matters is not how practical it is but what it feels like on arrival. The brief asked for anything but restraint.

Two floors, 120 m² in total. Part of the task was to stop them reading as two separate flats.

The answer

The floor does the joining: chevron-laid oak runs through both levels, and the same pattern leads into the stair. Brass carries it further — in the arched door frame, the fittings, the shelf edges, the divisions of the glazed screen. Two materials, everywhere.

The entrance is the house introducing itself: an arched brass portal, a perforated brass mesh screen behind it, and a large round mirror opposite. The mirror was designed for this wall — a perforated metal disc with concealed lighting that throws a pattern onto the plaster.

The bathroom has botanical wall panels with brass joints and two backlit oval mirrors. Patterned floor tiles below: a holiday house is the building type where those still belong.

The bedroom rests on a single gesture: a gold-ground ginkgo panel above the bed, lit from behind. The suspended ring lights on either side were made for this room too.

What it took

The mirror and the bedroom lights did not come from a catalogue: they were designed for this house, with production drawings ready for manufacture. Both have since entered the Ren Design range — the same piece, from the same drawing, now available to order.

A holiday house does not usually produce a product. This one did.
