Just Play

A wall light built from the Zsolnay Just Play tile series. Two ceramic plates in a brass frame, with a concealed light source and a polished brass reflector between them.

From tile to light

The Just Play series consists of fan-shaped, interlocking ceramic elements — plain and relief-patterned plates, in glazed and eosin finishes. The governing motif of the series is the ginkgo leaf, a favourite form of Hungarian applied art at the turn of the century.

The wall light is built from that system. Two plates sit in the frame, one above and one below; a curved gap remains between them, backed by polished brass. The source is not visible: light reflects off the brass and runs across the relief of the ceramic. The pattern only fully appears once the light is on.

The configurator

Pieces are not chosen from a catalogue but assembled. An online configurator was built for this, where the upper and lower plates are set independently:

That is 5 × 5 = 25 possibilities for the upper plate, the same again below, with five frames:

25 × 25 × 5 = 3,125 variants

The chance of meeting the same wall light as your own is therefore negligible. Not bespoke manufacture — a system from which a unique piece is assembled.

The material

The plates are made at the Zsolnay manufactory in Pécs, in traditional glazes and eosin. Eosin, the metallic lustre glaze, was developed in Pécs in 1893 and named after the Greek goddess of dawn — the same technique that characterises Hungarian buildings of the turn of the century.

A handmade product: the flow of the glaze and the sheen of the surface differ from piece to piece.
