Hokusai Ring

A handcrafted art panel in a brass frame, lit from behind. An object by day, a light source after dark.

Illuminated art object · Oriental series · IAO-TL-01

The Hokusai Ring table lamp switched on: a backlit blue-and-gold wave panel in a brass frame on a dark oak table
Light passes through the material of the picture: the thickness of the drawing and the density of the glaze decide where it reads brighter.

A tribute to Hokusai

The panel is a tribute to Hokusai — not for its subject, but for what he set in motion in the history of art.

The Japanese woodblock prints that reached Europe from the mid-nineteenth century unsettled what Western painting believed a picture to be. Flat fields of colour, strong contour, cropped composition and unfamiliar viewpoints acted directly on the French Impressionists, and through them on Art Nouveau and the formation of modern art. Hokusai’s wave appeared on the 1905 cover of Debussy’s La Mer.

That thread interests us because Art Nouveau is also one root of Hungarian design. The same culture of line that travelled through Paris to Vienna and Budapest is present in Zsolnay’s glazes and in turn-of-the-century interiors. The series explores that connection; the second piece is the Chinois Ring, after Chinese ink painting.

The object

A table light usually exists only while it is lit. This works the other way round: the Ø500 mm panel is a picture when switched off — enamelled glass or porcelain, with a hand-worked surface.

Switched on, the COB LED strip behind it does not light the room but the panel. Light passes through the material of the picture, so the thickness of the drawing and the density of the glaze decide where it reads brighter. No two pieces are the same.

Construction

The frame and light system are constant; the art panel changes. The rear cover is screw-fixed, so the LED and driver are serviceable through the base.

Build-up, outside in: art panel (6–8 mm) · diffuser (2–3 mm) · light-mixing cavity (10–14 mm) · COB LED strip · aluminium heat sink · rear cover.

CRI ≥ 95 is not incidental. The colours of the panel only read correctly under a light source with high colour rendering — more in the knowledge base.

To order

Made to order. The art panel is handcrafted; small variations in the surface are characteristics of the object, not faults. [email protected]
